On the occasion of United Nations Day, we are delighted to invite you to our event
WE THE PEOPLES. What role for the civil society on the UN Security Council?
Taking place on Monday 25 October from 6 to 8 p.m.
At Welle 7, Bern and online.
Numerous UN documents highlight the importance of including civil society in particular when it comes to issues like peace and security. At this event we want to explore what this looks like in practice. Who can deliver a statement at the UN Security Council (UNSC)? Under what conditions? Who has the decisional power, which briefer is invited and what impact do these statements have on the work of the UNSC? These are just some of many questions we will address at this event.
Our special guests will allow us to look at the topic from a governmental, academic and civil society perspective.
Flavio Milan, Head of UN Coordination at the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs.
Fabien Merz, Senior Researcher at the Center for Security Studies at ETH Zurich.
Dr. Annyssa Bellal, Senior Research Fellow at the Geneva Academy, UNSC Briefer.
Madeleine Rees OBE, Secretary-General of Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF), UNSC Briefer.
The event will be held in English and moderated by Ulrich Lehner, President of the UN Association Switzerland.
Followed by an apéro at Welle 7.
